Shampoo
Use a Shampoo that is mild, or recommended for daily use. If you suffer from dry scalp, try shampooing every other day, and simply rinse your hair on those non-shampoo days. Men who use heavy styling products such as gels, pomades, and creams can occasionally wash twice to remove the excess build up caused by these products.
Conditioner
Conditioner are designed to replenish moisture in hair. It adds shine and manageability and protein to hair. To intensify the benefits of your Conditioner, leave it on the hair for 3 to 4 minutes. Do not rinse your hair with very hot water; it will remove moisture and take away from the conditioning process.
Hair loss
There are many causes of hair loss in men, including disease, nutritional deficiency, hormone imbalance, and stress. However, by far the most common cause of hair loss is what is called adrogenetic alopecia.
No miracle "cures" for hair loss. Even surgical hair restoration does not cure the hair loss process; what it does is redistribute permanent hair to balding areas. The same can be said of the two medical or drug treatments that have been shown to be of use in hair loss.
Topical Minoxidil
As a topical preparation, minoxidil is approved to treat alopecia androgenetica (male pattern baldness) variably expressed in males as hair loss at the vertex of the scalp and in females as thinning in frontoparietal areas. Topical minoxidil is generally well tolerated with dermatological adverse effects being the only side effects usually reported. These include irritant or allergic contact dermatitis and hair growth in undesirable areas.
Minoxidil is applied twice daily directly to the scalp and massaged in. The drug must reach the balding scalp and remain there for 4 hours to be effective. Generally some effect will be seen within 4 months but a full effect may take a year. The 5% solution causes more and thicker hair growth and may produce results in about 2 months. Minoxidil doesn't necessarily work to the same degree on everyone. This therapy is effective at arresting further hair loss, and to a lesser extent, regrowth of miniaturized follicles.
* PROPECIA is the first and only FDA-approved pill proven to treat male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area in men.
The fact is, for most men, PROPECIA works. The results of 2 years of clinical testing* showed favorable results for the vast majority of men on PROPECIA.
- 5 of 6 men kept the amount of hair they had (vs 28% with a sugar pill)
- 2 of 3 men regrew some hair (vs 7% with a sugar pill)
- 80% were rated improved by doctors (vs 47% with sugar pill)
Most men reported an increase in the amount of hair, a decrease in hair loss, and an improvement in appearance.
* Based on vertex studies at 2 years, of men aged 18 to 41 with mild to moderate hair loss. There is no evidence that PROPECIA works for receding hairlines at the temples.
